On April 24th, the Chinese Society of Engineers (CSE) held the Engineering Capacity Building Experience Exchange and Discussion Seminar to further promote the industrial pilot program on mutual recognition of engineer qualifications, and refine relevant societies’ engineering competency assessment process and their mechanism of servicing engineers. Mr. Bin Zhang, Deputy Secretary-General of CSE as well as Deputy Director-General of Center for Professional Training and Services of CAST, and Mr. Bob Cryan, President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), attended the seminar and made presentations. The seminar was hosted by Jingfang Zhang who is Deputy Director of International Cooperation Committee of CSE and General Manager of China Railway Signal & Communication Corp.
Mr. Bin Zhang introduced CSE and the progress it has made in constructing the engineering competency assessment system and international cooperation. He said that CSE plans to apply for accession to the multilateral engineers agreement and hopes to deepen practical cooperation with IET in engineering capacity building, jointly exploring methods to better support engineers’ career development. Mr. Bob Cryan reviewed the cooperation between IET, CAST and CSE, gave a global overview of IET’s international engineering qualification recognition practice, emphasized the importance of continuous professional development and shared the experience on how IET provides resources for engineers.
Attendees from China Institute of Communications and China Society of Automotive Engineers also introduced their practical experience in carrying out engineering competency assessment and serving engineers’ career growth. The assessors of engineering competency assessment and the representatives of CSE Engineers talked about their takeaways from participating in the assessment.
By attending the seminar, societies conducting pilot programs gained deeper understanding of engineering competency assessment and agreed that it is necessary to continuously improve the service mechanism for engineers, better connect the assessment process with engineering education accreditation results, and widely publicize engineers culture and engineering achievements so as to enhance engineers’ pride at work and identification with work and create a social atmosphere conducive to engineers’ career growth.
